Live well in Australia’s first BeachSAFE community

The Alkimos Beach BeachSAFE program offers free family water education programs and the area’s only patrolled beach, all within a short walk from home.

At Alkimos Beach, you can live the coastal lifestyle in Australia’s first BeachSAFE community, boasting its own Surf Life Saving Club, free family water education programs and the area’s only patrolled beach, all within a short walk from home.

Alkimos Beach and Alkimos Vista residents can take part in a range of community BeachSAFE activities free of charge, thanks to the Lendlease and DevelopmentWA partnership with Surf Life Saving WA. A great way to become immersed in the coastal lifestyle and meet new neighbours, the BeachSAFE programs include community first aid courses and water education programs Surf Babies and Surf Kids.

Helping the Alkimos community enjoy beachside living and learn about water safety are the dedicated volunteer members of Alkimos Surf Life Saving Club (Alkimos SLSC), located at Alkimos Beach. Established in 2017, the Club has grown to more than 260 members, facilitating summertime beach patrols and a range of beach programs.

Leading the growth and development of the club is Shaun Nicholls, Club President and recently named Surf Life Saver of the Year 2022 by Surf Life Saving WA.

Having joined the club with his family in 2017, Shaun is incredibly proud of Alkimos Surf Life Saving Club’s community foundations.

“The Club’s strength stems from an ever-growing culture of inclusion and a sense of belonging,” he said.

“We encourage each member of our Club family to find an area of interest where they can grow and provide input, regardless of age or ability.”

Shaun encourages families to join the Alkimos SLSC as a way to connect with their local community and make new friends. There are many opportunities for all ages to get involved in the Club, both in and out of the water. Programs include Woodside Nippers (5 – 13 years), the Youth Program (13 – 25 years), Surf Sports programs and accreditation, Life Saving Beach Patrols, plus fundraising and administration duties at the Club.

Building the successful Alkimos SLSC Youth Program is a focus for the upcoming season, with plans for more accreditation courses, new equipment, and additional training opportunities for members.

Shaun explained that the Youth Program has given many young people aged 13 to 25 years the opportunity to give back to their local community by volunteering as life savers during the summer months, and teaching water safety programs.

“A lot of our youth members are now leading Woodside Nippers groups and teaching the kids who participate in Surf Life Saving WA’s Surf Babies and Surf Kids here at Alkimos Beach,” he said.

“Being part of this Club teaches life skills and helps give back to the community, there’s a lot of satisfaction in that.”

The primary role of the Alkimos SLSC is the protection of beach users and to save lives, with beach patrol being the most important part of the Club’s role in the community. During the summer months, Alkimos Beach is patrolled by volunteers from Alkimos SLSC every Sunday from 9am to 2pm, please check the current season calendar for details.

With many opportunities to get involved in the community and enjoy the beach with confidence, Alkimos Beach offers you and your family the chance to live well with an unrivalled experience in coastal living.
