New nature garden building healthy kids at Mayfield

For the last 6 months, Casey families have been enjoying a new nature garden, designed specifically to nurture childhood development.

Developed as part of Lendlease community, Mayfield, the Children’s Nature Garden aims to increase the time children and families spend outdoors, helping to tackle growing rates of childhood obesity and support healthy child development.

Nature Play WA research has found that natural outdoor learning improves children’s creativity and problem solving skills and enhances cognitive abilities, levels of physical activity, social relations and health.

Neil O’Connor, Lendlease General Manager for Victoria, says that the company constructed the nature garden at its Mayfield community based on this research.

“We build communities and, at the foundation of healthy communities, are healthy families.”

“The nature garden at Mayfield creates natural landscape with stones perfect for sitting on, wooden structures perfect for climbing, and sand and dirt perfect for getting hands into,” he said.

Lendlease has also built interactive outdoor environments for children at Darling Quarter at Sydney’s Darling Harbour and the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne.

The Children’s Nature Garden at Mayfield is located on three hectares of woodland centred around an old oak tree. It features a bird’s nest play structure – sand pit, basket swings and balance beams – all within the native flora and fauna.

Cr Mick Morland, Mayor of the City of Casey, said that the nature garden at Mayfield reflects council’s comprehensive approach to child development.

“It’s not just the kids who love playgrounds; these are special places in which family relationships are forged and lifelong memories are created,” he said.

The launch of the nature garden last November coincided with the launch of a boutique display village, showcasing eleven contemporary homes from a range of Melbourne’s leading and specialist builders.

“There are plenty of choices for home buyers, including sustainable and heritage style options,” Mr O’Connor said.

“At our display village, you can discover your own unique style, find the perfect colour palette and make your dream home a reality.”

Lendlease has been building communities across Australia for over 50 years, with 45 major developments completed to date.
