Abey Road Bridge Due For Completion Mid-August 2017
The $6.1 million project to connect Abey and Brooklyn Road across Toolern Creek and into Atherstone is nearing completion.
The Abey Road bridge will provide another access point to Melton train station and reduce traffic on Station Road. According to the City of Melton council website, as of now the major stages of the build are already finished including the bridge deck structure, asphalting, path connections under the bridge and the required roadworks on Abey Road and Brooklyn Road.
All that remains now is the landscaping, retaining walls, guardrails, footpaths and final architectural features before the Abey Road bridge will be open to traffic.
The Abey Road bridge is a significant investment in the Atherstone community by the City of Melton and will improve accessibility, flow of traffic and reduce overall commute times. In 2016, Kelvin Tori, the Chief Executive of Melton City Council, was quoted in Business View magazine as saying, “We see the investment in community infrastructure as being really important in how new communities grow, develop a sense of cohesion and ultimately thrive. Our philosophy is that if we provide quality community infrastructure, we are providing the community with a gathering place where they can meet and interact. That way people develop pride in their area and a sense of ownership and belonging. We think that’s really important and it’s the underlying philosophy that drives how we plan our communities.”
