Local Business Profile: Meet Abey
While building your new home in Atherstone you may come across the name Abey quite a bit. For over 60 years their brand has been known for providing excellent sinks, basins and tapware for your kitchen and bathroom. But did you know they have also been a part of the Melton community for nearly 20 years?
After establishing in 1956 Abey relocated from Airport West to Melton in 1999. The 26 acres they chose then is still being used today as Abey’s head office and hires about 100 staff on site locally. Many of these employees live in or around Melton too and work in areas such as sales, administration, manufacturing and warehousing.
The custom designed Abey facility specialises in manufacturing plumbing products. Many of their specialty imported bathroom and kitchen products (such as sinks, tapware, baths and basins) are also stored and then distributed from Melton to retailers such as Reece and Bunnings.
As a Melbourne based and family owned business, Abey prides itself on supporting the local community. Many of their suppliers are local Melton businesses which helps with efficiency due to proximity and reliability. These include Westwood Fine Cabinetry, Cumbos Cabinets, Advance Stationers, Bearing Wholesalers, Bunnings in Melton, Total Tools Melton, SGA Engineering and Supercheap Auto. Abey also choses to employ other local companies such as sign writers, cleaning and security companies.
Abey frequently opts to hold meetings and large functions at the Western BACE located within the Atherstone community.
Plus the staff make regular use of the local cafes and takeaway food outlets around Melton for their lunches and snacks.
As one of the most well established companies and a large employer in Melton, happily Abey has no plans to move. “Our future is to stay in Melton and hopefully to continue to grow our premises further,” says Marketing Assistant Michelle Irvine.
And, yes, the road is named after the company too.
