Theres no place like home for Yarrabilbas first resident
This month, Yarrabilba reaches a monumental milestone as our community celebrates 10 years as one of Queensland’s most successful and sustainable new townships. To mark the occasion, we chat with our very first resident, Regina Lata on what drew her to the community and why a decade on, she still calls Yarrabilba home sweet home.Still living in the same home she originally moved into almost a decade ago, Regina has witnessed Yarrabilba’s transformation from the dirt roads into the thriving and family-friendly connected community it is today.
“I remember moving to Yarrabilba all those years ago with my two teenage children, looking for a supportive community for my family,” said Regina.
“From its humble beginnings when it was just dirt roads, I have seen it evolve and become a thriving community with so many amenities and services.
“Moving in as a single mum, I saw the growth potential of Yarrabilba and knew it would be the perfect place to call home. Fast forward to today and I’m now married, my two children have moved out of home but I still live with my husband in that original house. We’ve made so many friends here over the years. It’s been the best decision to make the move here.”
In the past decade, more than 10,000 people have made their home at Yarrabilba, attracted to the vibrant and community lifestyle with 120km of walking and bike paths, 10 parks and regular community and sporting events.
Launched in 2012 as a priority development area, the $11 billion Yarrabilba community will ultimately provide homes for around 45,000 people and approximately 13,000 jobs on completion.
At 2,029 hectares – just under half the size of Cairns – Yarrabilba is already a thriving, modern township with four schools, four childcare centres, health services, a Coles supermarket, restaurants, cafes and sports fields and employment hubs.
