Get set to go wild at Yarrabilba’s newest adventure park!
Right before our very eyes, Yarrabilba’s newest community park, Billubera Park, is coming to life. From the 10-metre elevated maze bridge to the 4.5-metre tube slides, Ninja course, basketball court and two large kickabout ovals, young children right through to adults will have hours of fun exploring and making memories in this exciting park. Let’s look at what’s on offer for our residents and the wider community.
In the final stages of construction, Billubera Park is set to impress, encouraging residents to go wild and explore the natural beauty of our community, while inviting friends, family and neighbours to connect.
The park has been designed by RPS and constructed by Eureka Landscapes, while the feature play tower has been co-created and built by Fleetwood Urban.
The major play structure within the 5.6-hectare park has been inspired by nature-based play and set among green surrounds.
The park will include numerous shelters, picnic tables, seating, BBQs, amenities block and on street parking.
RPS Principal Landscape Architect Emma Fraser said Billubera Park was a celebration of nature.
“The vision behind Billubera Park is to immerse the user in nature through carefully locating key embellishments within and around the existing trees,” she said.
In the Yugambeh language billubera means ‘a clear sky or fine day’ this name was chosen as it represents the prospect of having clear, fine and sunny days at this family orientated parkland. The language connects the site back to country and shares culture with the wider community.
“Play pieces, sporting facilities and exercise equipment, interpretive signage, nature walks and bird boxes combine to educate users in a fun and interactive way.
“Along with the playground, there will also be two main kickabout ovals, which can combine to form a large event space for markets, neighbourhood days, Christmas carols, movie nights, fetes and other community events. The larger oval is about the size of a soccer field so could be used for practice matches or informal games.”
A feature basketball court area will encourage residents to shoot hoops, ideal for a fun neighbourhood match or practice area.
A pathway twists and turns its way through the park, linking all spaces together and providing a balancing trail for exploration and discovery. The park also has several open space areas located throughout for informal play, picnics and social gathering.
Fleetwood Urban Director Ian Joyce said the park’s play structure had been designed with sustainability in mind, while also representing the natural environment of Yarrabilba.
“Overall, the new play structure will be 7 metres high and stretch more than 20 metres in length. Some exciting features include; two multi-level play towers, 10-metre elevated ‘maze bridge’ walkway, two 4.5-metre tube slides, a 2-metre single slide, hardwood timber staircase, tunnel climb and a space net,” he said.
“The cladding design of this was inspired by the eucalypt trunks in the area. This softens the industrial look of the playground, as well as the use of timber throughout.”
Test your skills? on the Ninja course
The new playground will cater for all age groups, including a toddler and junior play area, nature play areas and play pieces that appeal to an older age group.
“Nestled into the existing tree line, the two-tower bridge elements lift the visitor 6 metres up into the tree canopy,” said Emma.
“The bridge is a maze offering multiple ways to travel from one tower to the other through the richly leaved canopy, immersing the user in nature and offering an elevated view of the park.
“Following the theme of immersed in nature, the park offers a Bush Ninja course that uses a combination of propriety equipment and nature-based obstacles along a track that weaves through existing trees and new plantings.”
The Bush Ninja course starts at the solar-powered stopwatch and ends with a challenging climbing wall. Let the fastest win!
Sustainability at the heart of the new playground
Throughout the design and construction of the new playground and park, considerable effort has been taken to preserve and protect the existing mature gum trees adjacent to the park. Material selection was another focus with Class 1 Australian Hardwood (Spotted Gum) featured heavily with a nature-inspired colour palette to help the large structure blend seamlessly with the surrounding habitat.
There are a number of bush trails through the existing bushland with future links to Plunkett Conservation Park and interpretative signs that share with the visitor some of Yarrabilba’s sustainable initiatives and conservation programs.
Ready for play
Billubera Park is expected to be open for play by the end of year and is just one of the many new playscapes and parklands planned for the growing community.
Located on Grampians Circuit near South Rock State School, Billubera Park will also adjoin a new district sports park for even more healthy outdoor fun.
Keep your eyes peeled on our website, Instagram and Facebook for more updates on the opening date of Billubera Park.
