The 30-year evolution of Greater Springfield
30 years ago, the Greater Springfield region was merely an empty parcel of land.
Flash forward to 2022 and it is now home to over 53,000 people and recognised as Australia’s newest emerging city, and South East Queensland’s fastest growing region.

For the region to grow to such exponential heights, it needed a visionary that was committed to transforming the space into a safe, connected city.
That person was Maha Sinnathamby – one of Australia’s most iconic entrepreneurs and property developers.
Purchasing the land in 1992 with his business partner, Bob Sharpless, the duo had a dream to transform the space into a safe and connected city, where children could walk to school, couples could embark on romantic strolls in the park, families could build their dream home and professionals could commute to work with easy.
It didn’t come without challenges, however. Many people were quick to doubt the viability of the project, due to the corridor’s reputation for being economically and socially depressed. At the time, it had no access and no transport, and many doubted that it could ever rival the CBD of Ipswich.
“We were the subject of scorn and ridicule when we first put it (the idea) out there,” Bob said in a recent interview with 7 News.
Despite these doubts, the region has grown to exponential heights since 1992 and is now home to:
- 12 private and public schools
- A university and TAFE
- Two railway stations
- Robelle Domain Parklands, with a swimming lagoon, water play, cafes, stage, and amphitheatre
- Mater Private Hospital
- Brisbane Lions Training and Administration Facility
- Orion Springfield Central
- Brookwater Golf Course
and much, much more.
Despite these significant and impressive milestones, Greater Springfield is only at 25% completion, with a further 30 years planned for this burgeoning region.
“I remind everyone in our (Springfield City Group) team, you might think you’ve worked hard for the first 30 years, but you’ve got three times as much work to do in the next half of the project,” Bob said.
Lendlease is proud to have partnered with Springfield City Group – the master developers behind Greater Springfield – for more than 20 years, working closely together to deliver two masterplanned communities in the heart of this wonderful region.
The first project, Springfield Lakes, has received national recognition and multiple awards for its design and was completed in 2020 and sold out in the same year. Springfield Rise at Spring Mountain is currently the number one selling project in Ipswich, and has become an address of choice due to its proximity to education, healthcare and amenities. This community is set for completion in 2026.
