Townsville’s surrounding islands are a must-visit. Each one offers a unique experience: 

  • Orpheus Island: A luxurious all-inclusive resort best accessed via a scenic 30-minute helicopter ride. 
  • Pelorus Island: Home to 1,100 fish species, ideal for snorkelling and diving. 
  • Hinchinbrook Island: A haven for adventurous hikers. 
  • Magnetic Island: A local favourite, perfect for relaxing, exploring and enjoying water activities, plus spotting native wildlife.

Townsville’s winter temperatures make it an ideal time to hit the trails. Here are some top hiking spots: 

  • Wallaman Falls: Located near Ingham, about a 2.25-hour drive from Townsville. This trail offers a breathtaking view of the falls and a 3.2 km return walk to its base. 
  • Townsville Waterfall Trilogy: Found in Paluma Range National Park, these hikes range from 2-3 hours (Ethel Creek Falls and Triple Falls) to 6-10 hours (Diorite Falls). Enjoy the fresh rainforest air and stunning waterfall views. 

 

Stargazing in the outback 

Winter nights are perfect for stargazing! Head to Charters Towers for a sky full of stars, away from city lights. Set up camp at Charters Towers Tourist Park or the Big4 Aussie Outback Oasis Holiday Park for an unforgettable experience. While you’re there, explore local attractions like the Venus Gold Battery and the Texas Longhorn Tours. 

Elliot Springs Markets 

Closer to home, the Alligator Creek Lions with Townsville Castle Hill Lions Club host the Elliot Springs Markets at Wadda Mooli Park on the second Saturday of every month.  

Starting at 8am, you’re sure to find homemade crafts, sweets and goods, from relishes to candles, honey, herbs, books, eco-products, dog treats and so much more. Grab a coffee and a bacon and egg roll, for the perfect start to a crisp morning with neighbours and friends at home in our community!
