This Elliot Springs couple said ‘I do’ in a surprise outdoor wedding celebration!

Elliot Springs residents Cherie and Jono invited friends and family for a laid-back outdoor engagement party, but guests were in for a delightful surprise. The couple transformed the casual afternoon into an impromptu wedding, exchanging vows with their beloved pups by their side and sharing an exciting announcement. 

An outdoor garden celebration at home in Elliot Springs 

On Sunday, July 7th, Cherie and Jono stunned their guests at Wadda Mooli Park in Elliot Springs, who were initially invited for an engagement party. Instead, the couple revealed their wedding ceremony, set against the backdrop of lush gum trees and adorned with delicate pink floral arrangements. 

The excitement didn’t stop there - Cherie and Jono also announced they are expecting a baby girl. 

“We told everyone it was an engagement and Jono’s 30th birthday party, and then surprised them with a wedding ceremony and a gender reveal cake for our little baby!” Cherie said. “It was my vision to have a casual, garden-style wedding that included our dogs and accommodated our extended family. The park’s natural elements provided a beautiful backdrop for our ceremony.” 

Their beloved dogs, Chowder and Rocco, played a special role, with Chowder proudly serving as the ‘best dog.’ “Our dogs were an important part of the celebration, and their presence made the day even more meaningful,” Cherie said.  

Cherie and Jono’s love story 

Cherie, originally from Hong Kong, and Jono, a Townsville native, first met at the hospital where they both worked, having connected initially through the dating app Bumble. 

“Jono and I met in March 2021 during my hospital placement. We quickly discovered we worked in the same ward. Our connection grew over lunch breaks and shared rides to work,” Cherie recalled. 

Jono, an oncology nurse, and Cherie, a social worker, say their relationship is made special through their shared values and finding joy in everyday moments. “It’s the little moments we enjoy together that make our relationship unique.” 

The couple chose Wadda Mooli Park in Elliot Springs for its serene setting, perfectly aligning with their vision for the day. 

 “The park is familiar to our dogs, and the serene atmosphere and flexibility of the community hub were ideal for our needs. It’s less busy than other parks, has good public facilities, and provided a great backup plan for any weather changes,” Jono explained. 

Their advice to future couples? “Be comfortable making exceptions to traditional wedding expectations. It’s your day, so make sure you have fun and enjoy it!”   

An exciting new chapter in Elliot Springs 

For Cherie and Jono, getting married in their new community added a deeply personal touch to their celebration. As self-confessed homebodies, they found it especially meaningful to tie the knot where they plan to plant roots and grow their family. 

“We couldn’t have wished for a more personalised wedding, with our future planted in the community and many more memorable times to come here. We’ve enjoyed the serenity, the location, and the supportive community,” Cherie said.  

“Our two rescue dogs love the dog park and their walks along the different walking paths and trails.” 

“We’re loving our new home and have been busy nesting, setting up the nursery for our baby girl. We’re also beyond excited about the news of a childcare centre coming soon to the neighbourhood.”
