Queens Gardens

Stop and smell the roses! Pack your picnic basket and venture into the picturesque greenery of Queens Gardens. Tucked away behind The Strand, this heritage-listed botanic garden boasts a vast collection of tropical plants from towering palms to sweet frangipanis. Wander through the lush rainforest, or let the kids explore the two hedge mazes – there's something for everyone.  

Don't forget to pop into the bird aviary, which is home to cockatoos, rainbow lorikeets and more. With plenty of paths to stroll along and shady trees to relax under, it’s the perfect place to reconnect with nature.  

The Balcony Restaurant 

Step back in time and dine at the charming Balcony Restaurant, located right in the heart of Townsville. Built in the 1920s, this charismatic heritage building has been home to the beloved Balcony Restaurant for over 40 years. Climb the hardwood staircase to find the relaxed and open balcony dining space, where you can enjoy a tasty bite to eat or a cup of coffee with live music and views of the charming neighbourhood below.

Riverway Lagoons

If you're looking to cool off, dip your toe in Riverway Lagoons, where you can swim safely all year round. Sheltered by raintrees and bordered by the scenic Ross River, the lagoons feature a more formal space for lap swimming, as well as a more relaxed pool for the kids to play. With shade structures to provide protection on sunny days, why not make use of the picnic tables and outdoor BBQs for lunch? With both a riverwalk and park nearby, it’s the ideal spot for the whole family to spend the day outdoors.

Barra Fun Park

Get your adrenaline pumping at Barra Fun Park, Townsville's only backyard theme park. Experience the thrill of hooking a barramundi, have a splash on the inflatable obstacle course, or try your hand in waterskiing with the high-speed cable ski. Located just 30 minutes' drive west of Elliot Springs, it's a must-do fun-filled day out. All-inclusive day passes are $29 each or $99 for a family of four.

Rotary Lookout at Mount Stuart

Feel on top of the world at Mount Stuart's Rotary Lookout, aptly named for its panoramic views of Townsville and surrounds, including Magnetic Island. Despite being the city's highest lookout point, it can be accessed in less than 15 minutes by car. Otherwise, the lookout can be accessed by experienced hikers, mountain bikers, or climbers who choose to brave the mountain. You can also opt for a scenic stroll and follow the Loop Trail around the summit to catch a glimpse of the blue waters of Ross Dam out west.
