A green dream in the tropics: Terry and Grant's sustainable haven in Elliot Springs
Elliot Springs’ newest residents and Sydney natives, Terry and Grant have made a bold move, leaving the hustle and bustle of the city behind to create their forever home in our picturesque community.
Partners of 23 years, the Sydneysiders made the decision to trade the busy city life for the tranquillity of Townsville, and set out to build not just a home, but a sustainable haven in the heart of North Queensland.
Proud parents of two Nanday Conure parrots and semi-retired with backgrounds in retail management, website design and media, the couple were ready for a change that not only embraced a laid-back lifestyle but also reflected their commitment to sustainability.
“We moved to Elliot Springs to build a green home. Our dream was to create a heavily insulated, large solar home with a tiny pool and a charger for our electric car,” Terry said.
Building a green oasis
The couple built with local builder GJ Gardner Townsville, with the goal of creating a completely self-sustaining house that boasts zero electricity bills, free running costs for their electric car, and even a monthly credit from energy provider Ergon.
“We had the idea to build a self-sustaining house. So far, our electricity bills are zero, therefore our smart car running costs are free and we generate a $180 monthly credit from Ergon. The house is naturally cool, so our project has been successful,” Terry said.
“The house was built bespoke to my own design, with features to achieve our goals of no running costs, coolness and sound insulation between rooms to keep the birds quiet (they can get very loud!).”
“It is an all-smart home, we have control of everything, on a 480m2 block, which is perfect for us as we wanted low yard maintenance. GJ Gardner’s workmanship and design has turned out excellent. A special shout out for Jesse Ironside for the deck and fences and Shadeland for the shade cloth both sides, they were extremely good to work with.”
A close-knit community
Offering a leafy, natural backdrop and a friendly community feel, Elliot Springs ticked all the boxes for Grant and Terry.
“We heard about Elliot Springs from a salesperson at Burdell and as soon as we met Meryl, the sales executive, and saw a block that backed onto the bush, we were sold,” Terry said.
“Meryl was one of the standout people for us that clinched the deal. She was so knowledgeable and helped us to find our perfect block.”
Swapping the crowds of Sydney for a slower pace of life, a sense of belonging was also high on their wish list.
“We chose Elliot Springs for a more intimate neighbourhood experience. It’s quiet, safe and because it is near the hills, provides some cooler relief from the Townsville heat,” Terry said.
“We’re excited about the re-opening of the Bindal Ridge walk, which we’re looking forward to exploring, and the Happy Vibes Café. We’re also looking forward to the future village centre, which will be our go-to local shopping area.”
