Lighting up Jordan Springs for a worthy cause

Christmas has always been a special time of year for the Burns family, but in 2022, they’re relying on the magic of the festive season a little more after a difficult couple of months.

Many Jordan Springs residents are familiar with the twinkling lights and Christmas fanfare of the Burns household come December 1.

For the past nine years, Robert Burns and his family have been ‘decking the halls’ of their Fleet Avenue home with hundreds of lights to not only bring smiles to the faces of people passing by, but to raise money for charity.

“I’ve been decorating the house with Christmas lights for the past nine years and normally I ask for donations for Lights for Kids from people who stop by.. we usually raise between $1,500 and $2,000 each year,” Robert said.

However, after his wife Kasie was diagnosed with Stage 3 brain cancer in July this year, Robert decided to raise money for the Cancer Council instead. In the space of two weeks, he has already raised close to $3,000.

“With everything that has happened this year, we decided to raise money for the Cancer Council instead and have had plenty of support from colleagues and companies,” Robert added.

With four kids in a tow – aged 8, 5, 3 and 1 – Christmas is a fun and festive occasion for the Burns family, even in the face of adversity.

The family of six kicked off the festivities the same way they do every year by having a party with family, friends and neighbours the first night they lights their lights on.

You can see the impressive lights display yourself by visiting 7 Fleet Avenue, Jordan Springs. The Christmas lights will be turned on from 7:00pm until 10:30pm on Sundays to Thursdays, and until midnight on Friday and Saturday nights.
