Splash into summer at the Illawarra’s best beaches

Calderwood Valley residents are spoiled for choice, with an amazing outdoor lifestyle right on their doorstep.  From sun-drenched sea pools to long, sandy beaches where you can surf or simply relax, there are plenty of family-friendly beaches in the Illawarra region for locals to enjoy.

Here are some of the best local beaches to check out this Summer:

Coledale Beach

Coledale beach is patrolled year-round and is a popular spot with families, with sparkling blue waters sheltered by rock formations on both ends. You can also pack a picnic lunch and make use of the BBQ area and tables provided along the beach front.

Thirroul

Thirroul beach is a fan-favourite for surfers and families alike! Backed by a park with a children's play area, the beach is also located close to boutique shops and cafes. There’s also an ocean pool named the ‘Art Deco Olympic Pool’ which is perfect for a refreshing ocean swim minus the waves.

Wollongong City Beach

Wollongong City Beach stretches 3.1 kilometres from Flagstaff Point to the Port Kembla seawall. At low tide, kids will love checking out the northern end of the beach for some beautiful natural rock pools. There's also a playground and picnic tables to enjoy!

Coalcliff Beach

For a calm stretch of sand to build a castle or a protected place to swim, this small beach is the perfect spot to take a dip! Coalcliff Beach also features an ocean pool tucked under the cliffs, which is a fun way to cool off with a view across to the ocean.

Port Kembla Beach

Port Kembla beach is a go-to favourite for Illawarra locals and it’s easy to see why! The beach is patrolled, making it ideal for families with small children. There are also three patrolled pools here to check out; a toddler’s pool, paddling pool and slightly deeper kid's pool, as well as a Kiosk which sells ice creams and coffee.
