Searching for a new movie to screen for your next family film night? Look no further. Bridge the generation gap by showing the kids some of your best-loved ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s flicks. Here are some of our favourites to get you started.

The Princess Bride

Fantasy, 1987

Your kids may ask, “Is this a kissing book?” just like young Fred Savage, but there’s so much more to this fantastic comedy than just romance. Between Prince Humperdink’s dastardly plan, Inigo’s quest for the six-fingered man who murdered his father, daring duels between master swordsmen, the lackadaisical hilarity of Miracle Max and a quick foray into the Fire Swamp to fight off those freaky ROUSs, this film has something for the whole family.

Original Star Wars Trilogy

Science fiction, 1977–1983

With the Star Wars universe ever expanding through TV series and yet-to-be released movie blockbusters, it’s well and truly time to take the kids back to the very beginning. (Or is it the middle? We’re talking episodes IV–VI here!) Rejoin Leia, Luke, Obi-Wan, Han, Chewy and everyone’s favourite droids as they fight the evil Empire for intergalactic freedom. May the Force be with you!

The Labyrinth

Fantasy, 1986

In the immortal words of Jareth, David Bowie’s hilarious goblin king, “Try this one on for size, you big hippie!” Packed with puzzles, fantastical feats and magical encounters, Jim Henson’s cult classic coming-of-age story is perfect for your next movie night. Starring some of the muppet man’s most beloved characters, join teenage Sarah as she’s forced to embark on a quest to reach the center of an enormous otherworldly maze to rescue her baby brother.

The Goonies

Adventure, 1985

A nod to the spirit of adventure and the swashbuckling pirate in all of us, The Goonies is an intrepid escapade that your kids will love. Follow Mikey and Brand Walsh and their loveable gang of mates as they follow an ancient treasure map to unearth the long-lost fortune of legendary 17th-century buccaneer One-Eyed Willy, fighting baddies every step of the way, in an effort to raise funds and save their home from foreclosure. Remember: Goonies never say die.

Back to the Future I–III

Science fiction/action, 1985–1990

So 2015 flew past and hoverboards never happened, but that doesn’t mean this sci-fi favourite isn’t worth rewatching with the kids! Follow Christopher Lloyd’s Doc Brown and Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly as they use their time-travelling DeLorean to journey 30 years into the past, to the future to save Marty’s family, and then back to the past again on a series of action-packed, laugh-out-loud adventures. Just don’t try explaining what a flux capacitor is!
