Yarrabilba Turns 10
Yarrabilba recently celebrated 10 years of being one of Queensland’s most sustainable and innovative Masterplanned Communities.
“I still remember moving to Yarrabilba nine years ago with my two teenage children, looking for a supportive community for my family. From its humble beginnings when it was just dirt roads, I have seen it evolve and become a thriving community,” says Regina Lata, who was one of Yarrabilba’s first ever residents.
Fast forward to 2022 and 10,000 people now call Yarrabilba home, proud to be the residents of a neighbourhood that encompasses natural beauty, a wealth of amenity and cohesive community spirit.
On August 28, Yarrabilba celebrated 10 years with its residents at McKinnon Sports Field, where families enjoyed free entertainment, carnival rides, fireworks and food. It was a fitting celebration for a place defined by quality of life.
One of Queensland’s leading sustainable communities, (and the first in Australia to achieve a Six Star Green Star rating, representing environmental leadership) Yarrabilba was innovative from day one. It was a trial site for CSIRO’s Virtual Power Station, which saw households save up to 60% on their power bills. The local native seed collecting program has seen threatened and rare local species replanted and regenerated. And since 2019, Yarrabilba has supported a circular economy, resulting in reduced waste, better recycling and greater reliance on cleaner power.
Twelve months ago, new precinct, The Parks, brought residents even more green space including numerous sports and recreational parks and a $65 million state primary school set to open in 2023. A Town Centre is also on the horizon.
It’s an exciting community to be part of, and one that will continue to evolve. Just ask Regina. “Moving in as a single mum all those years ago, I saw the growth potential of Yarrabilba and knew it would be the perfect place to call home,” she says. “Fast-forward to today and I’m now married, my two children have moved out, but I still live with my husband in that original house. We’ve made so many friends over the years. It was the best decision to move here.”
