New Toolern Station construction works underway

 

Ballarat Line Upgrade 

 

 

Preparation works have commenced for the new Toolern Station at Atherstone, as part of the Ballarat Line Upgrade (BLU) project.

This is an exciting step in the construction program as we look towards a late-2019 opening of the station, which will provide a convenient link for Atherstone residents to Melbourne’s Southern Cross station.

The new Toolern Station is proposed to include:

• two platforms connected by an accessible pedestrian link
• sealed car parking
• drop-off zones, taxi spaces and secure bicycle facilities
• bus interchange and shelters
• security (CCTV) and lighting
• station facilities.

BLU consulted with more than 450 commuters at Melton Station and around 600 community members at the Djerriwarrah Festival and the City of Melton Toolern Summit about the proposed station layout. The community highlighted important issues such as traffic and transport links, as well as safety and security at the station, which supported the submission for planning approval and will be considered in the station design, which will be released over the coming months.

Construction works on the Ballarat Line Upgrade – part of a $551 million investment by the Victorian Government – commenced in October 2017 and will enable much-needed extra services during peak times, and trains every 40 minutes off-peak to service the growing communities of Melbourne’s outer west and Ballarat.

In a 8 September 2018 article in the Ballarat Courier Mark Havryluk, Director Regional Rail Revival, said more than 500 people were working on the Ballarat line with the Deer Park to Melton extension expected to be completed by the end of 2019.

"Ballarat passengers can look forward to more services and better reliability once the Ballarat line upgrade is complete," Mr Havryluk promised.

"There will be much-need extra services in the morning and afternoon peak and it will allow for trains every 40 minutes off-peak."

"It will enable more services on the line, and help improve the reliability of services, as trains will have more opportunities to pass each other, allowing them to recover sooner from disruptions.”

Mr Havryluk said the duplication of the line between Deer Park West and Melton will allow for the future electrification of the line to Melton.

He said one of the lesser known advantages of the upgrade would be how it worked into the new Melbourne Metro Tunnel, which is expected to be completed by 2026. It would allow Ballarat commuters to cut 20 minutes off their trip to destinations like St Kilda Road.

“Passengers on the Ballarat line will be able to seamlessly interchange with Metro Tunnel services at Sunshine and Footscray Stations to reach destinations at Parkville and St Kilda Road by train for the first time,” he said.

“Ballarat line passengers will be able to travel by train to the St Kilda Road employment precinct and the Shrine of Remembrance at the new Anzac Station and the University of Melbourne and hospitals via Parkville Station.”
