The Alkimos Scout Group recently conducted a beach clean-up at Alkimos Beach with Perth Natural Resource Management (NRM), a not-for-profit organisation with a focus on the natural environment and enhancing it for the benefit of the community.

The cleanup was facilitated by Alkimos Beach developers, Lendlease and LandCorp, and Perth NRM.

The Scouts learned about the hazards that marine life and our beautiful coast face, what people can do to protect our coast and oceans in perpetuity and what flora and fauna you can find in the local coastal environment.

In the 45- minute beach cleanup the group collected two large garbage bags of rubbish with the largest item being an abandoned picnic chair.

“Most of the waste collected consisted of small broken plastic parts and bottle lids that would have been most likely washed ashore. They are the ones that cause most of the havoc and this is usually the type of plastic that gets eaten by birds and other sea animals”, said Scout Leader Ryan Scott.

They also got to enjoy a sausage sizzle at the Alkimos SLSWA Club and a spectacular Alkimos Beach sunset!

The Alkimos Scouts hope to make the beach clean up a bi-annual event.
