Lendlease hailed most sustainable residential developer in the United Kingdom


Lendlease has put sustainability at the heart of its business since its inception nearly 60 years ago – it is fundamental to our vision ‘to create the best places’ that are truly fit for the future. Social and environmental sustainability is at the heart of everything we do.

Today Lendlease was ranked first among the biggest 25 UK residential developers based on our sustainability performance by NextGeneration.

The NextGeneration* initiative is probably the most rigorous benchmark of residential developers’ sustainability performance anywhere in the world. 

Each housebuilder is assessed on over 80 criteria including: sustainability governance, reporting, environmental management, health and safety, procurement, place-making, customer engagement and community development. 

Lendlease was awarded top position because NextGeneration concluded that we “firmly embed sustainability wherever we have a presence”, and we scored particularly highly in the ‘community and customer engagement’ category.

We are very proud of some of our recent sustainability achievements.  Trafalgar Place at Elephant & Castle is one of the lowest-impact, most biodiverse urban developments in the UK. As well as replacing carbon-intensive materials with greener alternatives such as cross-laminated timber and geopolymer concrete, world-leading ecologists have been engaged to help us ensure a net increase in biodiversity on the site.

Our wider regeneration of the area, Elephant Park, is one of just 19 projects globally that have been accepted into C40 Cities Climate Positive Development Program, a ground-breaking global initiative to shape the future of sustainable urban regeneration that will independently verify our commitment to ensure the development is Climate Positive in operation by 2026.

We also completed Cobalt Place in Battersea this year, a mix of highly sustainable apartments and zero carbon townhouses. Located on the site of an abandoned school building, the new residential blocks have all been built using cross-laminated timber and incorporate green roofs. Other features include a significant increase in trees in the public realm, and a majority of the units have electric vehicle charging points. 

NextGeneration was set up over 10 years ago to help drive transformation in the sustainability of the UK’s housebuilding sector and each year it helps us identify the areas in which we need to improve, as we constantly seek to raise the bar. 

With the UK facing a chronic housing shortage – and, globally, rapid urban population growth, resource depletion and climate change –  we have a responsibility to deliver homes that are truly fit for the future, by designing and creating the best places to the highest sustainability standards.
