Sprout Hub launches to help grow the community in Calderwood Valley
Illawarra, 20 April 2017: Sprout Hub, a new initiative to support the first residents and community of Calderwood Valley, was opened today by project partners Lendlease, Sprout Ventures, and local café operator Bean Roasted.
Sprout Hub Calderwood Valley is a small, temporary, multi-use venue that is part café, part casual community space. The facility will provide a relaxed meeting place to accommodate a wide range of events, activities and co-working opportunities.
It is available for use by Calderwood Valley resident groups and associations and other groups in the local area that run programs to benefit the new Calderwood Valley community.
Lendlease General Manager of Communities NSW/ACT, Arthur Ilias, said Sprout Hub is an innovative way the development can provide community resources prior to permanent infrastructure being built.
“Generally in a new community, community infrastructure isn’t built until there’s a strong residential population to support it. Sprout Hub offers something now – to the early residents and local workers building Calderwood Valley.
“Sprout Hub is designed to help forge important social connections between residents, as well as provide networking and capacity building opportunities for local not-for-profit groups and small business.
“It will be a central gathering place for the budding community, from those who just want to grab a coffee and snack to those who want to network, participate and create,” Mr Ilias said.
Sprout Hub is an initiative delivered by Sprout Ventures in partnership with Lendlease. Sprout Ventures is a BCorp social enterprise dedicated to supporting communities by enabling social connection and fostering local leadership.
An important part of Sprout Hub is The Seedling Fund, where 10 cents from every dollar spent at the café is reinvested into a community fund. Over a three-year period, the Seedling Fund will award small grants to grassroots initiatives and groups.
Bridie Ritchie, Director of Sprout Ventures, said they are excited to be bringing Sprout Hub to Calderwood Valley for locals to visit and connect with their community.
“Local café legends Bean Roasted will be setting up to serve the community the best coffees, and we will work closely with the local Lendlease team to ensure lots of great things are happening in the space.
“Sprout Hub is an important early activator, both for those moving to Calderwood Valley and those already living close by. It will help to create the social capital that is integral to grow thriving communities,” said Ms Ritchie.
This is the third Sprout Hub in Australia. The Sprout Hub model was launched in 2014 from a pilot project run by Sprout Ventures for Lendlease and LandCorp in Alkimos Beach, Western Australia.
Sprout Hub is located on the corner of Escarpment Drive and Brushgrove Circuit, next to the Calderwood Valley Sales and Information Centre. Café operating hours will be 7am – 3pm Wednesday through to Sunday. Call the Community Coordinator on 1300 733 245 to enquire about booking the Sprout Hub.
Sprout Hub will be serving coffee at the opening weekend of the Display Home Village on 29-30 April.
