Community Garden sprouts in South Australia
Blakes Crossing’s Community Garden has taken on a life of its own, bringing together residents and green thumbs of all ages to grow and harvest flowers and produce.
Get outside, meet your neighbours and literally help grow the community – this is the purpose of the new community garden at Blakes Crossing in South Australia. Located at the Adventure Playground, the children of Blakes Crossing have been busy learning about sustainability and plant life as they eagerly chose their favourite baby greens and get their hands dirty digging, raking and watering out in the sunshine at the start of May.
Northcare Family Day Care, City of Playford special needs group and Blakes Crossing Christian College are all involved in the project but the community garden is a space that is open to everyone.
Ben Moore, Development Manager at Blakes Crossing, said the community garden is about connecting residents with their neighbours and creating a sustainable patch the local community can be proud of.
He said, “It’s been wonderful to see residents socialising around the garden as they come and check out the newly turned soil, get their hands dirty and stake their own name on a patch. In the process, they’re contributing to sustainable initiatives such as helping reduce household waste through composting and learning about practical organic gardening methods."
